Authie bay

If you loved the Baie de la Somme then you're going to love the Baie d'Authie, its "little sister" between Fort-Mahon-Plage and Berck-sur-Mer just as much! Some may call it wilder but it still attracts almost 500,000 visitors a year. It's just 35km from Le Walric campsite on the border between the Somme and the Pas-de-Calais. The Baie d'Authie is the dream location to come and recharge your batteries in one of Picardy's most beautiful natural settings.

An unspoilt setting for a break in the great outdoors!

The Baie d'Authie is one of the estuaries along the Picardy maritime plain and has a kaleidoscope of colours, landscapes, lights and backdrops that radically change with the tides and seasons. Peace and quiet reign here so it's no surprise that the bay was a phenomenal and abundant source of inspiration for countless impressionist and naturalist painters including Tattegrain, Chambon, Lepic, Daubigny and Trigoulet. Nowadays hikers love exploring the paths and trails covering around 2000ha across the Baie d'Authie. Between the marshes that make way for the foreshore, the sand belt along the salt marshes and pine, sea buckthorn and beach grass plantations, the flora and fauna in the Baie d'Authie is as fragile as it is fantastic. To protect the constantly changing natural habitats and biodiversity, some of the Baie d'Authie is part of the "Natura 2000" network.

An incredible ecological gem!

Bird-loving campers can, with a little luck and patience, see the white storks that sometimes nest around the Dune de l'Authie in Fort-Mahon-Plage. You're likely to spot a little egret, elegant avocet or peregrine falcon.
The harbour seals between the dunes to the north of the bay and the Authie channel have their habits too. They love the sand banks at low tide. If you grab your binoculars and boots, you can see them from a distance, especially from Epi 17 in Berck.
The Baie d'Authie is also packed with a wide variety of wild edible plants, some of which have health benefits such as common evening primrose, mugworts, sea purslane and sea lavender. Nature guides will teach you to spot them and unveil their secrets on a unique foraging tour!
