Baie de Somme

What do Ha Long Bay in Vietnam, San Francisco Bay in California and the Baie de Somme in Picardy have in common? They're all in the very exclusive club of the most beautiful bays in the world! There's no need to travel the world to feast your eyes on one. Just hop over to Le Walric campsite in Picardy between Pointe du Hourdel to the south and Pointe de Saint-Quentin-en-Tourmont to the north.

Explore the Baie de Somme on land, at sea and in the air!

You're spoilt for choice for ways to visit the Baie de Somme! You can explore it on foot, by bike, on horseback, by carriage, on a mini-cruise from Saint-Valéry-sur-Somme, a quirky ride on a real Belle Époque train and in the air in a ULM or hot-air balloon. Whatever you choose, you won't be disappointed!

An incredible place that amazes visitors and regulars alike

In the 11th century, William the Conqueror set sail from the Baie de Somme, Saint-Valéry-sur-Somme to be exact, to conquer England. 800 years later saw Impressionist artists such as Boudin, Degas and Braquaval and great authors like Jules Vernes, Victor Hugo and Colette delve deep into the bay for inspiration. They were stunned by the light that changed from one hour to the next, the fabulous skies and the Baie de Somme's contrasting landscapes and all helped make a name for this fascinating dreamlike place where man and nature come together with the utmost respect. The Baie de Somme is now listed as a “Grand Site de France” (2011) and attracts almost a million visitors from all over the world every year to admire the exceptional and unspoilt natural sites between the Baie d'Authie to the north and Ault cliffs to the south.

Heaven for birds and birdwatchers!

The Baie de Somme is renowned as a top European birdwatching site. The great diversity of the Baie de Somme's natural sites is ideal for millions of resident and migrating birds. Campers can spot ducks, geese, swans, gadwalls, common moorhens, coots, grebes, Northern gannets, egrets, herons, oystercatchers, stilts, avocets, woodcocks, Eurasian spoonbills, common cranes, kingfishers and a few rare pairs of storks! The list may seem long but there are for more as the Baie de Somme is a destination for over two thirds of birds in Europe!

A unique experience with the Baie de Somme seals

The Baie de Somme is famous for being home to the biggest colony of harbour seals in France. You can also see grey seals with their instantly recognisable “horse head”. You may not be able to stroke them but just remember that it's not recommended to get too close to them. Seeing them through binoculars is an unforgettable experience in itself! If you come across a seal who seems to be in difficulty, please don't try to touch it as you may distress it further or even hurt it! You should contact the Association Picardie Nature or Syndicat Mixte Baie de Somme-Grand Littoral Picard as they are the only organisations capable of handling seals. Despite their friendly appearance, seals can be aggressive if they feel threatened and could seriously injure you. Please remember that seals are protected wild animals and we must respect their tranquillity or they may migrate elsewhere!
