Your camping holidays in the Somme

Le Walric campsite is the perfect base for exploring the Somme and all this multi-faceted region has to offer. Whether you're into “sports and leisure”, “nature and relaxation” or “culture and history”, you're in for a treat and the Somme will soon become your favourite camping destination in the Hauts-de-France!

The Baie de Somme, one of the most beautiful bays in the world!

The campsite is perfectly based in the heart of the Baie de Somme, an amazing natural site that attracts thousands of visitors and campers every year in search of unspoilt and magical landscapes. Chalk cliffs tower over Ault to the south of the bay whilst towards Cayeux-sur-Mer, vast stretches of sand and pebbles reign. What hits you when you reach Le Marquenterre are the rolling dunes and endless marshes…As you can see, a camping break in the Somme is like spending your holiday on the other side of the world! It's no coincidence that so many artists and authors such as Edgar Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec, Jules Verne and Colette set up their easel or opened their notebook here. Artists aren't the only ones who have stayed here...The Baie de Somme is also an essential stop for thousands of migrating birds and a haven of peace for the largest colony of harbour seals in France. Take a walk across the bay to spot them and unearth the treasures of France's one-of-a-kind ecosystem!

The Baie de l'Authie, the Baie de Somme's “wild” little sister

On the edge of the Somme and the Pas-de-Calais around 30km from Le Walric campsite, the Baie d'Authie brings visitors amazing walks in unspoilt natural surroundings bursting with an abundance of flora and fauna. Here you'll find the sea resorts of Fort-Mahon-Plage and Quend-Plage alongside the best land yachting sites in the Somme. After exploring the Authie Estuary in Le Marquenterre, the Mollières salt marshes, the foreshore and vast sand belt, continue your journey away from the seaside and go inland where adventure awaits in the Somme.

Trips and experiences around Abbeville

Abbeville is the capital of Maritime Picardy on the edge of the Baie de Somme. It's a French Town of Art and History so it's well worth the detour with its Fine Arts Museum in a UNESCO listed belfry, Saint-Vulfran collegiate church and its fabulously flamboyant gothic style. Next visit Saint-Riquier and its former abbey or head for the Château de Rambures with its romantic grounds and stunning rose garden. In the heart of the Vallée de l'Authie, you can visit Valloires Abbey in Argoules which is the only 18th century Cistercian abbey that's still standing in France! Due North stop at Crécy-en-Ponthieu for a walk in Crécy Forest, the area's biggest forest and a lovely experience in the great outdoors during your camping break in the Somme!

En route to Amiens and the Haute Somme

Visit Amiens, appropriately nicknamed the “Little Venice of the North”, just an hour's drive from the campsite. Be sure to visit Amiens Cathedral, the largest in France, Saint-Leu old town with its art galleries, shops and restaurants, Jules Verne's house where the author lived for 8 years and the Picardy Museum that houses amazing collections running from Prehistory to the 20th century. Next head for La Chaussée-Tirancourt and soak up prehistoric Picardy at Parc de Samara. Time permitting, stop in Froissy and take the tourist steam train through the Somme Valley's landscapes to the Santerre plateau!

A holiday surrounded by the history of the Great War and the Battle of the Somme

If you've booked your next camping holidays in the Somme, you're bound to be whisked back to the First World War and the painful events that made their mark in the 20th century and the history of the Somme. The Memorial Trail linking Péronne to Albert, two iconic World War I towns, will introduce you to countless reminders of what our ancestors said would be “the war to end all wars”: trenches, mine holes, shell craters, half-covered quarries, cemeteries and memorials…countless relics that now honour the memory of all the soldiers who died in combat during the 4-year war. Must-visits include the Newfoundland Memorial in Beaumont-Hamel, its battlefield and amazingly preserved trenches, the Museum of the Great War in Péronne, the Souvenir Français Chapel in Rancourt, the Thiepval Museum to the Missing of the Somme, the impressive mine crater in La Boiselle and the Somme 1916 Museum in Albert.
