A short history of Cayeux-sur-Mer…

A fashionable destination

In the 17th century, Cayeux was a small commune of 200 sailor-fishermen whose boats were moored in the port of Le Hourdel. By the end of the 18th century, many fishermen from neighboring Ault had moved here, as the port of Onival had been completely swallowed up by the sea. From 1870 onwards, Cayeux-sur-Mer became a renowned seaside resort: the fashion for “sea bathing” swept through the daily lives of the Parisian bourgeoisie, beach cabins invaded the seafront and “Belle Epoque” villas sprang up all over the hamlets of La Mollière and Brighton. After Dieppe, Cayeux was the second seaside resort to be built in France.
